The story is about myself and the prejudices which other people usually have because of my ethnic background. The purpose of the story is to broaden people’s minds about dissimilarity.
Tarina kertoo minusta itsestäni ja ennakkoluuloista, joita muilla ihmisillä yleensä on taustani takia. Tarinan tarkoitus on avartaa ihmisten näkemyksiä erilaisuudesta.
SCRIPT
Here I am at the age of about three. Although I had blond hair as a kid it does not change the fact that I am a Roma. I live in Tuusula with my family which consists of my mother, father, sister and brother. Nowadays I’m best friends with my brother, although as kids we were everything else but that. I also spend a lot of time with my relatives. Respect for elder people, which I take for granted, is part of my culture. Sometimes I see how young people use bad language in front of their elders or push in front of an elderly lady in a bus queue – not everyone has respect for elder people. My friends are mostly Finnish. We do ordinary things together. We are quite a crazy bunch and we want to try everything new and different. For example, once we tried live action role playing. (I’m there…)… People don’t believe me when I tell them that I am a Roma. I guess it is because my hair is quite fair and I often wear jeans. Very often my new acquaintances have prejudices that irritate me. They keep asking me if I steal or gamble on horses, but as they get to know me better they realize that I am exactly like other people – although my culture is different from theirs. Sometimes I face situations where my culture gets in the way when I’m with my friends. For example, our custom of cleanliness requires that we don’t put anything on the table that has been on the floor. When my friends visit my home they might put a bowl of chips on the floor, but I quickly lift it back on the table. However, my culture is not a hindrance. I am proud of it and I find it great that it distinguishes me to some extent from other people. Although I am different, I am similar at the same time.
Tässä olen minä noin kolmevuotiaana. Vaikka hiukseni olivatkin blondit pienenä, niin ei se minua estä olemasta romani. Asun Tuusulassa perheeni kanssa, johon kuuluvat äiti, isä, sisko ja veli. Minä ja veljeni olemme parhaimpia kavereita nykyään, vaikka pienempänä olimme kaikkea muuta. Vietän aikaani paljon myös sukuni kanssa. Kulttuuriini kuuluu vanhempien ihmisten kunnioittaminen, mutta se on mielestäni itsestäänselvyys. Joskus kuitenkin näen, kun nuoret kiroilevat vanhuksien kuullen tai ohittavat mummon bussijonossa – vanhempien ihmisten kunnioittaminen ei taidakaan olla kaikille itsestäänselvyys. Minulla on enimmäkseen suomalaisia ystäviä. Teemme ihan tavallisia juttuja yhdessä. Olemme aika hullua porukkaa ja haluamme kokeilla kaikkea erilaista ja uutta. Kerran olimme esimerkiksi larppaamassa. (Olen tuolla…)… Ihmiset eivät usko minua, kun kerron olevani romani. Se johtuu varmaankin siitä, että olen aika vaalea ja käytän monesti farkkuja. Yleensä uusilla tuttavuuksilla on valmiita ennakkoluuloja, jotka ärsyttävät minua. Usein minulta kysytäänkin varastanko ja olenko hevosmies, mutta kun ihmiset oppivat tuntemaan minut paremmin, he tajuavat, että olen aivan samanlainen kuin muutkin – vaikka minulla onkin erilainen kulttuuri kuin heillä. Joskus kohtaan tilanteita, joissa kulttuurini tulee tielle kavereiden kanssa seurustellessani. Esimerkiksi puhtaustapoihimme kuuluu, ettemme laita mitään maassa ollutta pöydälle. Kun kavereitani on meillä kylässä, he saattavat laittaa sipsikulhon lattialle, ja tällöin minä nostan sen äkkiä takaisin. Ei kulttuurini kuitenkaan tiellä ole. Olen ylpeä kulttuuristani, ja minusta on hienoa, että se erottaa minua jossain määrin muista. Vaikka olenkin erilainen, niin samaan aikaan olen kuitenkin samanlainen.
BIOGRAPHY
BENJAM ÅKERLUND (b. 1988)
Benjam, a Finnish Roma from Tuusula, completed his secondary education in spring 2004. During the following year he completed e.g. the school of domestic science.
Benjam is especially interested in photography and radio work. He has presented and edited many radio programmes for example for Lähiradio. He teaches regularly dance for secondary school children and is also interested in the future possibilities offered by Media Education.
Tuusulalainen romani Benjam päätti peruskoulun keväällä 2004. Seuraavan vuoden aikana hän suoritti Järvenpäässä mm. talouskoulun.
Erityisesti valokuvauksesta ja radioalan töistä kiinnostunut Benjam on juontanut ja toimittanut useita radio-ohjelmia mm. Lähiradioon. Hän opettaa ala-asteikäisille lapsille säännöllisesti tanssia ja on tulevaisuudessa kiinnostunut myös mediakasvatuksen mahdollisuuksista.
