Microblogging platform Twitter has been put through the wringer ever since Elon Musk bought the company for an exorbitant amount last year. Plagued with policy changes, unpopular algorithm implementations and the Blue Check fiasco, many advertisers have pulled the plug on their ad spending. But the trouble doesn’t seem to be over just yet, as the Head of Trust and Safety at Twitter resigned this week.

Steadying a Sinking Ship

Ella Irwin resigned this week, having been the Head of Trust and Safety at Twitter for just a few months. While Irwin has yet to issue a public statement on the matter, it is widely believed that her resignation stems from Musk’s hands-on approach to content moderation – which Irwin oversaw.

Irwin’s Twitter profile no longer states that she works for the company, and according to several sources, her internal Slack account has been deactivated. Ryan Mac, a technology journalist at the New York Times, said that Irwin’s departure “comes after Elon Musk directly criticized his company’s handling of content moderation decisions today around content from the Daily Wire.”

The Daily Wire content in question is a Matt Walsh video called “What is a woman?” which Twitter employees marked as “misgendering” on two occasions. Musk replied to a tweet on the pulling of the Daily Wire video, stating that “this was a mistake” and that it’s “definitely allowed.”

Irwin’s resignation was further corroborated by a Reuters journalist, who posted on Twitter that it’s “confirmed” and “Ella Irwin tells me she resigned today,” linking to a Reuters report.

Irwin took over for Yoel Roth, who also resigned in November, after joining Twitter in 2020.
