Amazon Originals Coming to Other Streaming Platforms Soon

Streaming platforms, such as HBO Max and Netflix, are fiercely competitive in retraining subscribers, while also providing the best entertainment possible. It’s extremely rare for one platform to make its exclusive content available on a rival’s platform, but that is what Amazon is doing with the newly created Amazon MGM Studios Distribution.

Sharing the Streams

Amazon’s Prime Video platform is one of the big hitters in the streaming service market, having around 200 million subscribers globally. With those numbers, it competes directly with Netflix and Max for viewers, studio support and content creation. However, Amazon is taking a different approach to increasing its subscribers by making its Amazon Original content available to other streaming outlets.

The licensing of titles such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Handmaid’s Tale and the Vikings series will be handled through a new division called Amazon MGM Studios Distribution. This gives third parties the first opportunity to stream or broadcast Amazon Originals on their respective services and platforms.

While it is about increasing Amazon’s reach, it also makes financial sense, as newly-appointed head Chris Ottinger explains. “Pioneering the distribution of Amazon Originals for Amazon Studios is an exciting opportunity to bring fresh, never-before available quality content to audiences around the globe. In doing so, we will break through the current sales mold by creating custom packages that will fulfill our client’s individual content needs.”

Amazon has a bevy of original series available for syndication, but the distribution license also includes several films, such as Coming 2 America, All the Old Knives and The Tomorrow War. The decision to make the content more widely available comes after Amazon completed its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM last year, which holds the rights to more than 4,000 films and 17,000 TV episodes.

However, don’t expect to see recent titles, such as The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and Citadel, to fall under the licensing deal, as those weren’t distributed by MGM Studio.
