How to Transfer Discord Server Ownership

A personal Discord server can be a versatile tool to help you stay connected, organized, and engaged with your interests and social circles. Yet, being in charge of managing a server can quickly turn into a time-consuming affair. If you find that you’re overwhelmed by the responsibilities of owning a Discord server, you can quickly transfer ownership to someone else. This tutorial shows how to start the process on PC and mobile.

Transfer Discord Server Ownership on PC

Before proceeding with the tutorial, we should note that you will need to be the server owner to transfer ownership. Even if you are a moderator, administrator, or have another high-permission role on the server, you can’t transfer ownership unless you are also the legitimate server owner. If you don’t want to transfer it and want to do more with Discord, we can help you find new servers to join.

If you do want to transfer it and determine that you are, in fact, the Discord server owner, you can transfer ownership by following these steps:

1. Open the Discord desktop client on your PC.
2. Navigate to the server you own and click on its respective bubble.

3. Right-click the server icon and select “Server Settings -> Members.”

4. You’ll be taken to the “Members” area in Settings. Check whether you are the server owner before proceeding further. If so, you’ll see the “Owner” tag and crown symbol next to your username.

5. Once you confirm your role, find the person you want to transfer ownership to and hover your mouse pointer over them.

6. Click the three dots that appear next to that specific username.

7. Select the red “Transfer Ownership” button at the bottom of the menu.
8. A “Transfer Ownership” pop-up will appear on the display, informing you that it can’t be undone once you agree to the power transfer.

9. If you want to go through with it, toggle the “I acknowledge that by transferring ownership of this server to X, it officially belongs to them,” and press the “Transfer Ownership” button to confirm.

Transfer Discord Server Ownership on Discord on Mobile

Whether you’re using Discord on your Android or iOS app, the steps for transferring the ownership of a server are pretty much the same:

1. Open the Discord app on your mobile device.
2. Navigate to your server and tap on it.

3. Tap the three dots in the upper-right corner of the display.

4. Click on “Settings” from the pop-up menu.

5. Scroll down to the bottom to the “User management” area and select “Members.”

6. Find the person you want to transfer ownership to and tap on their username.

7. Press on the “Transfer Ownership” button at the very bottom.

8. Check the “I acknowledge” option on the next screen, then tap “Transfer.”

What to Do If the Server Does Not Have an Owner

If a server owner gets banned or decides to delete their Discord account without notice and hasn’t transferred ownership, the server can become “ownerless.” Such servers can continue to exist, but only for a brief period. Eventually, they are deleted.

If you find yourself on an ownerless server and are willing to take over ownership, contact Discord online to attempt to resolve the situation. Before you proceed, note the requirements for submitting a request:

• The server has 100 members.
• The current server owner hasn’t accessed their account for at least a month.
• You (the requestor) have been active on your account in the last 30 days.
• You (the requestor) have administrator or moderator permissions within the server’s settings.

If the ownerless server fits that description, follow the steps below to send Discord a request. Once your request is granted, you may want to learn how to create and add custom emoji to your Discord server.

1. Go to the Discord support page.
2. Select “Help & Support” from the menu underneath “What can we help you with?”

3. Type in your email address and select your type of question. Look through the options until you find “Server Related Requests.”

4. Select “Server Ownership Transfer Request” underneath.
5. Fill out the server’s details, including “Name,” “Current Server Owner’s Discord Username and Tag Number,” etc. Don’t forget to add the server’s member count.
6. Add a “Subject” to your message and briefly describe the server’s situation in the “Description” area.
7. Add an attachment if necessary and click “Submit.”

In most situations, the ownership issue is resolved relatively quickly, although in some cases, Discord has responded negatively to the request. According to a thread on the community forum, Discord has issued the following explanation for denying a server ownership transfer:

“If the previous server owner’s account was disabled, the transfer may be denied. Additionally, we cannot transfer ownership if you’re asking on behalf of another user or the current owner denied the transfer.”

How many owners can a server have?

A server can have up to four owners. Note, however, that only the original owner can transfer ownership to someone else.

How can I can I make another member on the server the “Owner” without relinquishing ownership?

If you want to make someone else an “Owner” on your server, you need to access your server’s settings, as we showed in the sections above, and click on the username of the other member. Select “Roles -> Owner.” This will give the co-owner of the server advanced permissions.

Can you kick the owner off the server?

Unfortunately, even if you have “Owner” status that was given to you by the original owner, you still won’t be able to inflict this upon them. It involves removing the member from the server. However, they will be able to rejoin with a new invite.

Can you have Discord automatically transfer ownership after a number of days have passed?

Unfortunately, this is not possible at the time of writing. However, this is a feature that many users have requested, so Discord may add something along these lines at some point.
